Xtreme Expedition: Jon Bowermaster Heads to the Antarctic

December 2, 2008

Jon Bowermaster will be heading back to the Antarctic just days away from the one year anniversary of The Explorer sinking in the same region last year.  The Explorer sank with 154 people originally onboard in one of the world’s harshest environments.  This ship was designed to be the first Antarctic tourist ship.  It’s main job would be to carry vacation adventurers to the far reaches of Antarctica.  Unfortunately an iceberg stood in the way and refused to budge.  The ship on the otherhand ended up sinking.

An accident like this in Antarctica usually spells disaster for those onboard.  Luckily, Jon Bowermaster (and a few others) happened to be in the region and were able to help rescue those that found themselves afloat in the freezing waters off of Antarctica’s peninsula.  Nobody lost their life.

On the one year anniversary of this incident, Jon Bowermaster has meticulously wrote up the details of what transpired with The Explorer.  His documentation and help with this incident has shaped Jon’s way of thinking ever since it happened.  Through his documentary filming, Jon can take us back to this incident and show us what transpired on this fateful Antarctic day.  To see the results of his filming, Click Here.

Jon will now be heading back to Antarctica to continue his filmwork documenting the effects of global warming on the region and living one adventure at a time.  His current expedition will be tracked on his personal website, with Jon giving blog and audio updates on a regular basis.  His team will be kayaking, swimming, trekking, climbing, and recording the Antarctic region to try to bring awareness to the area and some of the underlying effects that global warming is currently causing.

Jon Bowermaster’s latest expedition is sponsored in part by Mountain Hardware, National Geographic, Necky kayaks, and Werner Paddles.  You can read more about Jon Bowermaster in this month’s National Geographic: Adventure magazine, as well as a recent interview that he conducted with Men’s Vogue.  You can also follow Jon’s exploits on the Hardware Sessions blog (the official blog of Mountain Hardware), The Adventure Blog, this site-Xtreme Adventurer.com, or even on Jon’s own site, www.jonbowermaster.com.  This guy is everywhere!  If you have ever seen one of this man’s documentaries you would definitely understand why.
